paintings that I do, comprised of
cityscapes. I had an old SuperMicro
server case lying around, and its
shape suggested a building.
The bulk of the work was in the
cutting of the windows, using a dremel
tool and spending hours hunched over
the side panels, worrying if I was
cutting straight. Once I finished, I has
scrounging around for some 16th'
acrylic and came across a vacuformed
plastic part that suggested a skylight,
so once again I found myself hunched
over, this time cutting the roof.
Once the pieces started coming
together, I realized that the building
part looked ok, but was lacking a
reference point. I decided to include a
sidewalk and cut a piece of plywood for
the base, once again using the
dreaded dremel, this time, etching
sidewalk grooves into the wood.
After putting the pieces together, it
still seemed to lack something, so in an
effort to glean ideas, I hit the
pavement, staring up at ever building
around me- aha! There it was, edging!
I ran to the hardware store, found
several pieces of corner molding that
fit perfectly- the case was complete.
In order to give it a brick texture, I
made a stamp out of one of my left
over window cutouts, gluing small
rectangles of thin foam to it, to
approximate a brick pattern and using
a thin acrylic paint, stamped out the
bricks.
Finally, after installing lights, the last
bit of inspiration was a neon sign,
made by etching a piece of acrylic and
gluing it into a computer blanking plate.
